Births to Mothers born outside the UK

25 October 2018

The 2017 statistics can now be found in the following dataview on Northamptonshire Analysis :
Live Births : Mother's Country of Birth.

As reported previously the total number of live births across the county decreased in 2017, after two years of increases.   At 8,897 for the year, this is the second lowest figure logged over the last eleven years.

Nevertheless, countywide, the proportion of mothers themselves born outside the UK continues to increase both for those born in the EU (now 16.9%) and those born elsewhere (now 13.0%).   Amongst our economic comparators and nearest neighbours the combined proportion of births to non-UK born mothers places Northamptonshire 5th (of 15) behind Luton, Leicester, Milton Keynes and Bedford.   However for births to EU-born mothers alone, Northamptonshire is placed in second place behind Luton.   This is driven by above England average proportions of mothers originating from the EU giving birth in Corby (28.0%), Wellingborough (22.5%) and Northampton (20.9%).
