Update on NINo Allocations to Overseas Nationals

23 August 2018

The latest quarterly (Rolling 12 Month to end June 2018 - Y2EndJun18) data release looking at the allocation of National Insurance Numbers (NINos) to overseas nationals has been uploaded to Northamptonshire Analysis and can be found in the NINos Dataview.   Please remember this data refers to the location of these individuals at the time of their NINo allocation and does not take into account if they have moved since or what they are doing as a result of obtaining that NINo (eg working / claiming benefits).

Now finally following the national pattern, the number of new NINos allocated in Northamptonshire continues to decrease and for the 12 months to end June 2018 stands at 10984 allocations.   This is a -17.3% decrease since the peak allocation period (Y2End Sep17) compared to a national decrease of -13.9% over that period, although it should be noted that the national figures have been declining quarterly since a peak at the end of June 2015 (so the county is just involved in a catch up process).   Amongst the county's boroughs and districts the greatest decreases in NINo allocations to overseas nationals between Y2End Sep17 and Y2EndJun18 have taken place in Wellingborough (-23.7%), Corby (-21.1%) and East Northamptonshire (-20.2%).

The county's recent downward trend is driven by decreases in numbers of NINos allocated to EU nationals (EU8 nationals down -29.7%, EU2 nationals down -15.3%), but over the same period from Y2EndSep17 the number of non-EU nationals has increased by 5.6% (although much smaller numbers) with the strongest increases occurring in Daventry and Northampton.

Despite these decreases, four MSOAs in the county continue to record NINo allocations of more than 500 in the preceding 12 months.   Three of these are in central Northampton : N023 Semilong & Town Centre West; N023 The Mounts and N025 Town Centre South towards Hospitial/Wellingborough Road.   The fourth MSOA is in Corby : C006 Kingswood.
