Teenage Pregancies Updated

13 April 2018

The 2016 conception data released by the ONS at the end of March has now been uploaded to the Teenage Pregnancies and Abortions dataview found within the Children and Young People theme under the Early Years sub-theme.

The number of under 18 conceptions across Northamptonshire as a whole continues to decrease and now stands at 262, down 49.7% over the last decade, although national and regional decreases have been slightly over the 50% mark.

The under 18 conception rate in Northamptonshire stands at 20.9 / 1000 females aged 15-17, slightly higher than the national average.   For eight of the last ten years the Northamptonshire conception rate has been above both the national and regional rates.   Amongst the county's boroughs and districts, the 2016 conception rate varies from 25.9 / 1000 females aged 15-17 in Northampton to 11.6 in South Northamptonshire.

The percentage of under 18 conceptions leading to abortion across Northamptonshire in 2016 was exactly 50%, slightly lower than the national average of 51.8%.   Corby, Daventry and South Northamptonshire all register abortion percentages of over 60%, but it is Kettering which currently appears out of kilter to the rest of the county with a rate of 24.1%.   Kettering also had the lowest rate amongst the county's boroughs and districts in 2015.   It should be noted, however, that the ONS designate most borough/district data as low reliability.
